Assault of the Killer Wave in “Poseidon”

http://images.apple.comPrepare your life jacket and experience the horrifying attack of the killer wave in the movie Poseidon. It is a 2006 remake of the classic disaster film The Poseidon Adventure, based on the novel of Paul Gallico. It was released on May 12, 2006 and stars Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas, Emmy Rossum and Richard Dreyfuss. It is directed by Wolfgang Petersen and was produced and distributed by Warner Brothers, in association with Virtual Studios. It was nominated for a single Academy Award in the visual effects category last 2006.

Although the premise and basic setup in the 1972 film The Poseidon Adventure are the same, the characters and their specific situations are new. After a 150-foot high rogue wave capsizes a luxury cruise ship named Poseidon in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean during a New Year's cruise, a group of survivors struggles to escape from the ship before it sinks. The group is comprised of professional gambler Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas); ex-fireman and ex-mayor of New York City Robert Ramsay (Kurt Russell); single mother Maggie James (Lucinda Barrett) and her son, Conor (Jimmy Bennett); Ramsay's daughter, Jennifer (Emmy Rossum), and her fiancé, Christian (Mike Vogel); depressed businessman Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss); and stowaway Elena (Mia Maestro). Taking the risk by leaving the safety of the upside-down grand ballroom of the ship, where most of the survivors huddle behind bulkheads waiting for rescue, these men and women face fire, water, and other perils in their struggle to take control of their own destinies. Who will live and who will die as they make their way through the doomed ship?

If you're looking for a decent disaster flick, Poseidon delivers. It effectively plays up basic human fears and makes the most use of them on the big screen. They include fears of drowning, claustrophobia, falling from heights, fire, electrocution, a mother watching a child die, and other horrors. The film will definitely make you almost squirm to death.

Poseidon was released on DVD last August 22, 2006, in both a single disc and double disc edition. It was also be eventually released on HD DVD. The single disc edition has a behind-the-scenes feature and the theatrical trailer. The double disc edition adds the documentaries Poseidon: Upside Down: A Unique Set Design Chronicle, A Shipmate's Diary, which covers a film school intern's experience on the set, and a History Channel documentary that explores rogue waves.
