The Man of Steel Flies back in “Superman Returns”

http://imagecache2.allposters.comWith the inspired work of John Williams Superman II in 1978, Superman flies again, bringing mankind what Marlon Brando’s Jor-El called "the light to show the way".

At the end of Superman II, the producers promised "Coming Soon: Superman III." It has taken 26 years for that promise to be fulfilled. These many years later, Bryan Singer has gotten it right. In fact, Superman Returns is not only a credit to the first two Superman movies; it may be the best of the series. Its combination of romance and fantasy adventure is unparalleled in superhero comic book-to-movie sagas. This is a picture that picks up where "Superman" (1978) and "Superman II" (1980) left off, altering the brain waves of those who saw the disappointment film of the third (Superman III )and fourth(Superman IV: The Quest for Peace) movies of the series has been erased.

The story loosely follows on from Superman II, with Lois Lane’s (Kate Bosworth ) memory of his true identity wiped by a kiss and left the earth for a big reason:to find what was left of his own people in his planet Krypton. Now, the world's crises have gone unheeded for five long years since Superman's mysterious disappearance. Without him, crime has risen in the city of Metropolis and beyond; that's not even counting the future destructive acts of Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), who has been sprung from prison with the specific intent of using Superman's technological secrets for his own personal gain and glory. Then the Man of Steel (Brandon Routh) returns to Earth after a mysterious absence of five years: He tried, but unsuccessfully,on his mission, and has come to realize that Earth is a place in which he has never felt fully at home is really his home. But some things haven't changed. Everyone still ignores Clark, Jimmy Olsen is still Jimmy Olsen, and Lex Luthor is up to his old tricks again. This time his real estate scheme involves using stolen Kryptonian technology in a way that will not only threaten Metropolis, but the entire North American continent. Will Superman be able to save the day?

But there are more further complications. With Superman having been away from Earth for the better part of a half-decade, Lois has moved on in a big way. She has a son, Jason (Tristan Leabu), and engaged to his live-in boyfriend, Richard (James Marsden), that sends the Man Of Steel into meltdown. This unfold the emotional conflict that steer the movie in a new level.

All in all, "Superman Returns" features great performances, cool special effects, and beautiful imagery. Visually, it offers the kind of upgrade one would expect after a quarter century layoff. This time, you really believe a man can fly.
